About Us
Sabaoon is an initiative of the left-wing, anti-colonial Pashtun scholars and activists.
Who are we?
Sabaoon is an initiative of the left-wing, anti-colonial Pashtun scholars and activists. It is a critical organ that reviews the history, local political developments, and geopolitics of Pakhtunkhwa, Afghanistan, and the region. With a focus on articulating race, class, and gender, the Sabaoon collective seeks to fill a void in current politics and debates. We stand by all anti-war movements in our peculiar geography that has been a war theatre for both the colonial and the postcolonial state, resulting in countless wanton killings. Politics in Pakhtunkhwa is historically deeply connected to Afghanistan, its own movements, and the political currents in postcolonial Pakistan. We thus call for true decolonisation, which has never occurred. We also reject the exploitation and inhumane treatment of migrant and local labour, including transport workers, border workers, construction workers, and other oppressed workers in the informal structure. We also think that the Pashtun and Baloch questions expand the contours of Pakistani politics. Political scholars and activists must not remain indifferent to the capital-centered, racial and majoritarian policies of the state on the one hand and the national movements in these regions on the other. We also consider contemporary religious fundamentalism, propped up by imperialists from time to time, incompatible with the great Islamic anti-colonial and socialist traditions.
